Chapter Twenty-Seven
Leah and Nick bolted from bed when the telephone squealed the next morning at 9 a.m., 4 hours after they had returned to the apartment. Scrambling for the phone, Leah knocked her book and glasses off the nightstand.
âDamn it!â she shouted in a voice gravelly from sleep.
âMom? Itâs me. What are you cursing about? And whatâs with the voice?â
Leah cleared her throat and ignored the mention of cursing. âNot much sleep, Sara.â
âI thought dad would be up inputting his notes already.â
âNot this time. Yesterday was exhausting.â
âI thought the Befanata wasnât until last night. What was up yesterday?â
Leah ran a response through her mind. Oh nothing, just seeing a murder, being pursued, hiding in the dust of a burial cave, trying to act normal, knowing Iâm in the sights of a killer.
âYou know, preparation and I was taking some photos on one of the vie cave.â
âAre you guys fighting?â
âNo. Weâre fine. Does it seem like weâre fighting?â
âYou sound like youâre trying to hide something. Your voice is all funny.â
âWeâre fine. What about you two? Are you enjoying Paris?â
âItâs Prague, Mom, Prague. And weâve got news for you.â Leah could hear the child in her voice. âWeâre coming to see you!â
âYouâre coming? Did you already buy the tickets?â
Leah turned to Nick and made a face.
âGee, donât get too excited.â
âIâm sorry, Iâ¦â
âMom! Show a little enthusiasm. Itâs not all about the money. Cheap tickets if we came through Prague, and we had to grab them fast. Since we postponed the wedding we can afford it, so weâre spending some time here and catching Czech Airlines to Rome. I wanted to surprise you, but Jonathan said Iâd better not, just in case. And it sounds like it was a good thing I didnât.â Sara was disgruntled.
âItâs not that Iâm not excited,â Leah was struggling to find an excuse, âitâs justâ¦I havenât done anything about canceling the wedding. I havenât even called Genna. When will you come?â
âIâm not a baby, Mom. I called Genna, and between the two of us, weâve cancelled everything. Itâs taken care of. And Iâm not sure when weâll come.â She giggled.
âWhy are you giggling?â
âNothing. Just happy to be talking to you.â She broke into a full laugh.
âWhat is wrong with you? Whatâs all the laughter?â
Sara had burst into uncontrollable hoots.
âOkay. Howl away. I wonât ask again.â
âWeâreâ¦goingâ¦to pokeâ¦around Pragueâ¦for a little beforeâ¦â She chortled.
âYes, you said.â
âCome on, Mom! You donât sound excited at all!â
âJust tired. We got in very, very lateâor very, very early.â
âOkay, listen, sorry I woke you, Iâve got to go, Johnnyâs waiting.â She laughed again and hung up.
âTell me,â Nick grunted.
âTheyâre in Prague, and theyâre coming here.â
âLetâs hope itâs after all this is settled.â
âWith our usual timing? Not likely.â
